“Atlantic Sailing” is a new RYA Training Centre offering courses aboard a Beneteau First 40.7 “Yalla”. After scouring the temperate Canaries for a suitable location, sailing couple Richard and Fadwa selected Marina Lanzarote based on the combination of a well-serviced and accessible marina base, optimal sailing conditions and the charm of an authentic local setting.
After arriving on island last August, they have enjoyed a first six months of almost uninterrupted weekly bookings. Richard draws on a life of sailing and a decade’s experience as a sailing instructor having also spent time preparing crew taking part in the Clipper Round the World Race. “As a sail-training destination, Lanzarote offers a good steady 15-20 knots of wind with relatively flat seas. The entry to the marina passes through a commercial port area, which while this has little traffic, does provide some very useful navigational practice.”
The couple described the appeal of their chosen base: “In Marina Lanzarote we recognised a genuine sailing hub – there were transatlantic races, cruising families and couples having just undertaken their first major ocean passage. This is a great environment for our guests, many of whom have really enjoyed the international scene, getting to know other sailors on the pontoons. We love the gentle community atmosphere in Lanzarote; the locals are friendly and approachable and of course a brilliant climate rarely fails to make people that little bit happier!”
Atlantic Sailing teaches RYA courses up to Ocean Yachtmaster and also offers popular Masterclass refresher courses, covering sail trim, boat handling and safety procedures to Lava Charter’s yacht rental customers.
