Fast gaining pace as both a defining and yet relatively accessible transocean race, the RORC Transatlantic Race 2018, in association with the International Maxi Association, joined up with the Atlantic Anniversary Race last year to see a total of 23 boats take the start, hailing from a total of 9 different nations. Preparation for the race is intense and the race enjoys the expertise of many well-known professional crew, setting the pace for the fleet. At the head of the race is the prestigious team of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, organisers of a multitude of top-level international yachting events such as the legendary Rolex Fastnet Race and the fast-growing Caribbean 600.
At the same time, the event also provides the opportunity for newcomers to take part in an exhilarating transatlantic adventure, where good teamwork is essential and basic comforts put aside in the interests of maintaining an optimum competitive edge. Crews number between 20 and 2 and boat lengths between over 30m and 11m, creating a varied and interesting fleet.
This November marks the fourth time that Marina Lanzarote will host the race start, which is supported locally by the Canary Islands and Lanzarote governments, the Arrecife Town Council and Real Club Náutico de Arrecife. During the preparation week, Marina Lanzarote‘s technical yard services are always in great demand and the highlights are the convivial evening get-togethers in the local yacht club, marina and nearby venues.
The race ends in Grenada in the Caribbean with a warm welcome from Port Louis Marina and island officials. For those following the fleet, there’s a race tracker and even a Virtual Transatlantic Race game.
