No less than six blue marlin reported on the first day.
This Friday morning saw the start of the 31st edition of the Puerto Calero Marlin Cup, one of the most eagerly awaited competitions on the Canary Islands sport fishing calendar. This year, the event has brought together more than 50 boats from various islands of the Canarian archipelago, including a team that has travelled from the mainland to participate in this prestigious tournament.
The day started at 9am with the departure of some 53 boats from the marina of Puerto Calero. The participants set out in the hope of experiencing a rewarding day of open water fishing. The fishing area is largely unrestricted, but vessels must comply with all current regulations, including those governing marine reserves. Notably, access to the Chinijo Archipelago reserve is strictly prohibited.
Despite not having the most ideal conditions for fishing due to a fair amount of wind, the day yielded a significant number of blue marlin catches.
The first highlight of the day came at 10.43am when the boat Showtime, skippered by Pedro Bonny from Gran Canaria, managed to land the first blue marlin of the day, with an estimated weight of 200 kg. Barely 13 minutes later, the Exodus, under the helm of Luis Romero, took provisional first place with a blue marlin weighing 250 kg.
These two boats were the only vessels to secure catches during the first day. But the excitement continued with the reports from White Shark, Chimarro and Hasibi Tres. Showtime was able to determine the course of the day when at 2.26 pm they reported being close to the second blue of the day, but they ended up losing the fish and could not certify the catch. Naomi also reported two blues, but the team lost the first one and, with three minutes left in the competition, they were fighting with the second fish, reporting its release and thus also entering the competition.
The second day, which will start tomorrow at 9am, is expected to deliver calmer winds and better sea conditions. The public is invited to come down to witness the grand departure of the fleet Puerto Calero Marlin Cup from the marina. The event will culminate in a free concert by Inerxia.
The tournament is organised by Calero Marinas, in collaboration with the Club de Pesca Wahoo Azul Puerto Calero, and has the support of entities such as Islas Canarias, Turismo Lanzarote, Ayuntamiento de Yaiza (through its Sports Department), as well as the sponsors Cicar, Aon, Grupo Santander, Ereza, Grupo Tiagua and Maderas Marcial González.
