On Wednesday morning, the Marina of Puerto Calero hosted the event presentation.
Wednesday morning saw the eagerly awaited presentation of a new edition of the 44Cup Calero Marinas at the Marina in Puerto Calero. This event marks the return of the prestigious racing circuit to the island, celebrating its 12th anniversary with the inclusion of the local team, Calero Sailing Team.
The ceremony was attended by Juan Monzón, Sports Councillor of the Cabildo; José Juan Calero, CEO of Calero Marinas; Héctor Fernández, CEO of Turismo Lanzarote; Bertrand Favre, Director of the RC44 Class; Cameron Appleton, tactician of the Aqua; and Alfredo González, tactician of the Calero Sailing Team.
The teams, coming from up to 17 countries, are currently in the preparation phase of their boats for the start of the competition. More than a hundred people have arrived on the island to be part of the 9 teams participating in this event.
José Juan Calero highlighted the economic importance and pride that the event represents for the island, combining “young talents and renowned international sailors”. He also emphasized the economic return it generates for the island, as the boats have been on the island for several months, multiplying the spending at the destination.
Juan Monzón praised the fact that the island is “hosting such a prestigious event, especially this year with the return of a local team”. Meanwhile, Héctor Fernández justified Turismo Lanzarote’s commitment to this event, stating that it “completely fits into the destination’s strategy and attracts visitors who value quality, gastronomy, and sustainability”.
Bertrand Favre, Director of the RC44 Class, assured that “they have chosen Lanzarote since 2008 because the island always offers good images and a great spectacle on the sea”. Cameron Appleton, tactician of the Aqua, valued being able to sail in these waters for over 15 years and “feeling at home”. Finally, Alfredo González expressed his “excitement of being part of the team” and thanked the opportunity given by the Calero family.
The competition will begin this Thursday and will extend until Sunday. Nine teams will compete in a series across from Puerto Calero, offering a stunning nautical spectacle for spectators. The Aleph Racing, Team Nika, Charisma, Peninsula Racing, Ceeref Powered by Hrastnik 1860, Team Aqua, Artemis, Black Star Sailing Team, and Calero Sailing Team are all ready for action. This regatta is already generating great interest among the local population, who have filled the available spectator boat places, set up by the organization to follow the races next Sunday the 3rd, already.
The 44 Cup Calero Marinas is counting with the sponsorship of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Recovery Mechanism and resilience within the Next Generation EU Funds, regarding the Plan of recovery, transformation and resilience, Canary Islands and Latitude of life, the Council of Lanzarote, Turismo Lanzarote, Lanzarote European Sport Destination, the Municipal of Yaiza and its sports area, with the collaboration of the Cicar Group and the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife.
